Description: Every year Target HOPE holds welcome BBQ in Chicago especially for National High-school component Target HOPE members that are coming to Howard in the fall. During Memorial Day weekend Labor Day weekend Howard Chapter members who were in Chicago gathered to welcome the incoming freshmen. This day was filled with delicious food, intriguing conversation, and competitive games of spades. Approximately thirty Target Hopers were in attendance and the incoming freshmen had the opportunity to gain invaluable knowledge about what to expect in the fall.

Description: This was a fundraiser over the summer held in D.C. to help fundraise money for the upcoming school year. The organization raised $350.00 in order to raise money for students that participate in our “One Saturday Morning” Saturday Program. During this program over 15 members washed about 30 cars. A number of the students who participate in the Saturday Program came by throughout the day to extend a helping hand. This was not only a fundraiser, but an opportunity for our membership to come together to work as a team as well as bond as a family.

Description: Forty members of the high school component of Target H.O.P.E., which is based out of Chicago, IL, came to Howard’s campus for a tour. These students were informed about financial aid and enrollment information; treated to an organizational panel of various student leaders; and they ended with a competitive Scavenger Hunt of the campus. This program was significant because it inspired academic success amongst the youth of the African American community, and encouraged students to attend Howard University.

Description: Target HOPE participated in the organizational fair. The members showcased a wonderful three panel poster board full of pictures from past events, a 5 minute slideshow, the organizations t-shirt, and brochures informing prospective members about the purpose of the organization and all upcoming events. Over 100 students signed up for Target HOPE that day, many of whom are still very active in the organization.

Description: This was an opportunity for the organization to come together for guidance and inspiration and to inform the Howard University community about the details of our upcoming week. Chapel is the center of religious life at Howard University and it is dedicated to fulfilling the spiritual and religious needs of the students, faculty and administration. Our organization received an inspiring message and was able to worship as a group.

Name: MT. Howard T-shirt Sale

Description: In honor of Black History Month and in celebration of the legacy of Howard University, we created our Mt. Howard shirts. On the front of the shirt there is a replica of Mt. Rushmore except with faces of Howard alumni, Ossie Davis, Charles Drew, Thurgood Marshall, and Zora Neale Hurston. Above the Mt. Howard it reads “Great Minds Think Alike…” and on the back it says “That is Why We Chose Howard University!” On the back there is also a list of 29 Howard alumni and at the very bottom it says “Just to name a few…” The shirts are a crème color with chocolate color writing. The t-shirts were sold for $15 and the baby tees were sold for $20. Target HOPE sold over 80 shirts and made over $1000 in profit.

Description: The purpose of this event was to expose the Howard University community to the membership of Target HOPE and to distribute more information about our organization. Everyone enjoyed the food, fun, and festivities all while networking amongst our peers and establishing many life-long connections and friendships. There were approximately 40 students from Target HOPE and the Howard University community in attendance.

Description: This was an event held to inform students about ways to stay healthy while in college. About twenty participants were in attendance and they received valuable information about how to eat healthier on a budget and ways to prevent diseases commonly found in the African American community. There was also an exercise portion that lasted about 45 minutes in which the participants had a lot of fun running laps, doing aerobics, and performing other physically exhorting activities.

Description: This event was an opportunity for Target HOPE members and members of the Howard University community to fellowship over popcorn and a movie. Approximately 25 participants watched Saw II in Locke Hall Auditorium and had a night full of fun and fright.

Description: Target HOPE joined various student organizations in an effort to raise money for the Jena 6 victims. We constructed and displayed a board in the bottom of Blackburn filled with information about Jena, Louisiana and the racial prejudice plaguing their community. Target HOPE was able to raise & donate a total of 260 dollars in one day to the Jena victims.

Description: AIDS walk is a 5K Walk benefiting and produced by Whitman-Walker Clinic. The Clinic is comprised of diverse volunteers and staff who facilitate the delivery of high quality, comprehensive, accessible health care and community services. 15 Target HOPE members participated in this walk to help this committed clinic put an end to the suffering of all those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

Description: After breakfast Target HOPE spent the afternoon with Saturday Program kids at a Pumpkin patch in MD where they were able to get on hay rides, explore a corn stock maze, participate in a potato sack race, and pick out pumpkins to take home for Halloween.

Description: After breakfast in honor Halloween Target HOPE took the kids to a two level Halloween playhouse, and Haunted House. The kids were able to make personalized Halloween cookies, go to face painting stations, separate into team scavenger hunt contest, and walk threw a Haunted House.

Description: Target HOPE members traveled to Bruce Monroe Elementary School to give the students a fright before Halloween. The gymnasium was filled with over 100 students grades K-4th. Target Hopers set up a face painting station and various games including: spider ring toss, pin the face on the mummy, goblin bingo, spooky darts and Twister: Halloween edition. The Halloween carnival lasted for one and a half hours and it was a lot of fun for all in attendance. The students were provided with a safe way to bring in the Halloween season.

Description: Target HOPE wanted the children to be exposed to a play that crossed all cultural boundaries; the Jungle Book was the first story that came to our minds. We took the children to see The Jungle Book at Imagination Stage in Bethesda MD. The play was a enlightening, humorous, and educational musical that intrigued the children with their theme “We be of one blood” that was sung throughout the play.

Description: Twenty mentors and mentees spent this beautiful Saturday afternoon at the Washington National Zoo. We saw lions, gorillas, tarantulas, elephants, and a number of other animals. Everyone really enjoyed this event and was able to learn a lot about wild life.

Name: 360 Black History: Evolution of Black Music

Description: Target HOPE kick started it first 360 Black History initiative of the year in November at Bruce Monroe Elementary school. Target HOPE members created and performed a play entitled the evolution of black music which showcased influential music from slavery passing through the 1940s, and traveling to current modern day music for 80 elementary school children. Threw song and theater we educated the children on how Black music was used in the Underground Railroad, activism in “Say it loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud” and even the smooth R&B influence of TLC. During this event Target Hopers were able to interact with members of other organizations on campus and also bond with one another.

Description: Twelve Target HOPE members participated in an organizational kickball tournament at Greene Stadium. The team members spent hours competing in different kickball games and at the end of the day Target HOPE unfortunately, walked away with the no ribbon. During this event Target Hopers were able to interact with members of other organizations on campus and also bond with one another.

Description: In an effort to show our solidarity against the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Target H.O.P.E., in conjunction with HUSA and Red Cross will hosted its first ever Human Ribbon on the Yard as part of a program entitled “Join the Chain, Make a Change.” All participants came together to create a ribbon on the yard. Once the ribbon was formed we will recite the National HIV/Aids Pledge, listen to our guest speaker, took a moment of silence, and conclude the event by taking an aerial picture as a unified chain. The program served as a tool to educate Howard University students and the D.C. community about the severity of HIV/AIDS. Collectively we recruited over 10 organizations as well as individuals to participate and were able to raise over 1500 dollars and donate it to the Black Aids Institute.

Description: Five Target HOPE male volunteers started our mentorship program with Sunrise Academy (a school for young men with learning disabilities and low reading levels). They helped the guys with reading as well as impressing the importance of post-secondary education and trade schools.

Description: Twelve members of Target HOPE spent the cold evening spreading Christmas cheer to the different dorms on campus through old and new Christmas classic songs. During this event Target Hopers were able to interact with members of other organizations on campus and also bond with one another.

Description: Representatives from Target HOPE and Chicago People's Union went to Charter School to give a tutorial on HBCU Importance and its influence in African American culture to a 7th grade class of 24. Description: Many children suffer from blood loss due to several reasons. As one of the initiatives of Target H.O.P.E.'s Week of Resolutions, this bloodmobile drive was organized in hopes of maintaining the resolution of giving back to those in need. The Bloodmobile Drive was sponsored by the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC.

Description: Target HOPE sponsored the human Blacks in Wax Museum at Bruce Monroe. A number of students from the Howard University community, the majority being from Target Hope, posed as different wax figures from African American history. Ida B. Wells, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Osceola McCarthy Adams, A. Phillip Randolph, Marcus Garvey were amongst the figures in attendance. Over 100 students from Bruce Monroe came to visit the museum and were in awe and amazement at how well the historic figures were represented and how still the participants managed to be throughout the entire day.

Description: “Blacks Achieving Excellence” was an event done in conjunction with Rainbow Push Coalition in honor of Black History Month. We brought over 80 students from KIPP Public Charter School to Howard’s campus. The students were taken through an inspirational workshop of influential speakers. who shared their journey to excellence which served as motivational tools for the students. The students had an opportunity to hear one of Howard's most influential motivational speakers, Harold Grey, in addition to a Howard University graduate student, Brandon Wallace . They also had the chance to sit in on two informational panels, one consisting of freshman college students fresh from high school, and the other consisting of experienced college students approaching graduation. The students enjoyed a full lunch followed by our own "KNOW YOUR HERITAGE" intellectual game where the students were challenged with questions related to prominent figures in Black History. We concluded the day with a College Tour and Scavenger Hunt of the Howard University campus.

Description: 360 Black History Committee decided to make study guides field with Black History questions for its next project and submitted them to the teachers at Bruce Monroe in January so the students could be learning about Black Inventors. On February 28th Target HOPE Hosted a game show competition at Bruce Monroe quizzing the students on materials previously studied. This was an innovative and interactive way for the students to retain knowledge about their heritage.
